Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018). The Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the General Assembly that “China will not be blackmailed or yielded to pressure” on the matter of international trade, adding that “China has taken steps not just to defend its own legitimate rights and interests”, but also to “uphold the free trade system and international rules and orders.” Further on international trade, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang reiterated today (28 Sep) that it is “complimentary and win-win by nature,” adding that “it should not be a zero-sum game in which one gains at the expense of the others. No one should be allowed to place its own interests above the interests of others.” Wang continued “protectionism will only hurt oneself, and unilateral moves will bring damage to all.” On denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese Ambassador said his country “supports all improvements of relations between the North and South of the Peninsula as well as efforts to facilitate dialogue between DPRK and the US.” Wang said “China encourages the DPRK to continue moving along the right direction of denuclearization. We believe it is also right for the United States to make timely and positive responses so as the two countries are truly heading towards each other.” Wang also noted China’s support on the UN’s leading role in coordinating responses to non-traditional security challenges, “in the new frontier of global governance, such as cyber space and outer space.” He stated “States sovereignty, rules and responsibilities must be upheld” in this regard. The Foreign Minister added “terrorism, is the enemy against all human society, and should by no means be justified. Security Council resolutions must be honestly implemented to counter cyberterrorism, financing for terrorism, and the spread of radical narratives so as to remove the breading ground of terrorism.” Wang also highlighted the importance of multilateralism as the world is facing many challenges. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to international cooperation and stated that “States to State relations must be based on credibility not willful revocation of commitment.” The Foreign Minister reiterated that “international cooperation should be guided by rules not impulse. Practicing multilateralism is, first and for most, upholding the UN Charter, observing international law, and basic norms governing international relations and honoring international agreements reached upon through negotiation.” Wang also noted the international community must uphold fairness and justice in international affairs, including equality between all countries, respecting countries’ sovereignty, independence, and territory integrity and more.
